Merritt Ames, a Vermont preacher, started the Ames Chemical Company in 1860. Ames loved the new art of photography, and he augmented his business by refining silver from scrap photographic plates. Ames Chemical was sold to GAF Corporation in the late 1960s, and was subsequently purchased by the Ames Goldsmith Corporation in 1979. The current company carries on the tradition of dedication to innovative technology and exceptional customer service. We've been recycling for nearly a century and a half, making the most of silver - a vital resource for industry, medicine, photography, electronic components and manufactured consumer products.

Ames Goldsmith remains a vibrant testimony to the vision of Merritt Ames, who established a thriving company by reclaiming silver. As the company grew, we diversified into producing silver nitrate, oxide powders and flakes. Today, Ames Goldsmith also refines ethylene oxide silver catalyst and other selected silver-bearing scrap. Ames Goldsmith is ISO 9000 certified (U.L.) and holds preferred supplier status with many of its customers.

We're also proud of our commitment to the environment. In 1997, Governor George Pataki presented Ames Goldsmith with the New York State Award for Pollution Prevention; we were one of only eight companies honored for their efforts to reduce emissions and waste. Our award was a recognition of our new refining technologies, which enable us to reduce energy consumption and emissions - including a dramatic 50% reduction in NOX emissions.
